Total:

Ivy Geranium (Pelargonium peltatum) is a trailing tender perennial native to South Africa, named for its glossy, ivy-shaped leaves and its sprawling, cascading habit. Unlike upright zonal geraniums, it spills gracefully over the edges of pots, making it a favourite for hanging baskets, window boxes and balcony railings.

It bears showy clusters of single or double flowers in shades of pink, red, mauve, lavender and white, blooming heavily through the cooler months. In India it performs best in hill stations and during the winter season in the plains, where mild temperatures and bright light bring out its best flowering.

Easy to grow and drought-tolerant once established, it rewards gardeners with months of colour and is readily propagated from stem cuttings.

Uses

Ivy Geranium is grown almost entirely as an ornamental for its long-lasting, colourful flowers.

  • Hanging baskets, window boxes and tall pots where its trailing habit can cascade.
  • Balcony and terrace railings, a favourite in hill-station gardens like Ooty, Kodaikanal and Shimla.
  • Ground cover or edging in cooler regions.
  • Seasonal winter colour in pots across the Indian plains.

Growing tips

In the plains, treat it as a cool-season plant: plant out from October-November for flowering through winter and spring, and move pots to a shaded, well-ventilated spot before the harsh summer (April-June).

In hill stations it can flower for much of the year. Always use a free-draining mix and terracotta pots to prevent root rot during the monsoon, and shelter plants from heavy rain. Pinch young plants and deadhead regularly to keep blooms coming.

Ivy Geranium (Pelargonium peltatum) Care

Ivy geraniums love plenty of bright light and do best with 4-6 hours of sun, though in hotter Indian regions a little afternoon shade keeps the white blooms crisp. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry and avoid wetting the trailing foliage to prevent rot. Feed a balanced liquid fertiliser every couple of weeks through the growing season and pinch back straggly stems to encourage fuller, bushier growth.

Where to Place Your White Ivy Geranium

With its trailing, cascading habit, Pelargonium peltatum is made for hanging baskets, window boxes, balcony railings and tall pots where the stems can spill over the edge. The pure white flowers brighten shaded corners and read beautifully against green foliage and darker walls. Position it on a sunny balcony, terrace or windowsill with good airflow, and it will trail and flower for months.

Ivy Geranium Benefits & Uses

Ivy geraniums are prized for long-lasting colour, low water needs and a naturally trailing shape that softens hard edges on balconies and railings. The white variety is a versatile choice that pairs with almost any planting scheme and lends a clean, calming look to small urban spaces. They are also relatively pest-resistant and rewarding for beginners looking for reliable, season-long flowers.

Frequently asked questions

Can Ivy Geranium survive the Indian summer in the plains?
It struggles above 32 C. In the plains grow it as a cool-season plant for winter and spring colour, and move pots to a shaded, airy spot through the hot summer months. In hill stations it grows happily year-round.
Why is my Ivy Geranium not flowering?
Common causes are too little light, excess nitrogen fertiliser, or hot weather. Give it 4-6 hours of morning sun, use a high-potash feed, deadhead spent blooms, and expect best flowering during the cooler months.
Is Ivy Geranium safe around pets?
No. Pelargoniums are toxic to dogs, cats and horses and can cause vomiting, lethargy and skin irritation if eaten. Keep baskets out of reach of pets and wash hands after handling.
