Shisham (Dalbergia sissoo), or Indian Rosewood, is a fast-growing, hardy deciduous tree native to the foothills and plains of North India, famed for its strong, durable, beautifully grained timber used in furniture and cabinetry. It has a light, open crown of leathery leaflets that gives dappled shade, and bears small, fragrant pale yellow flowers followed by flat papery pods. A nitrogen-fixing legume, it improves soil and is widely used in agroforestry, roadside planting and reforestation. Extremely tolerant of drought, heat and poor soils, it is one of India's most important timber and shade trees.

Shisham (Dalbergia sissoo) Care

Shisham is a hardy, fast-growing deciduous tree that thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it well suited to most Indian climates. Water young plants regularly until established, then reduce frequency as this drought-tolerant species prefers slightly dry conditions over waterlogging. It tolerates a wide range of soils, including sandy and loamy types, and needs little feeding once its deep root system takes hold. Prune in the dormant season to shape the canopy and remove any weak or crossing branches.

Shisham Benefits & Uses

Shisham, also known as Indian rosewood, is prized for its strong, durable timber used in quality furniture and cabinetry, but it is equally valuable as a living tree. It provides excellent shade, acts as a windbreak, and fixes nitrogen in the soil, improving fertility for surrounding plants. The tree also supports agroforestry and is often grown along field boundaries and avenues. As a nitrogen-fixing legume, it makes a genuinely useful addition to a productive landscape.

Where to Place Shisham in Your Garden

Choose an open, sunny spot with plenty of overhead room, as Shisham grows into a large, spreading tree over time. It is ideal for boundaries, avenues, farm edges, and larger gardens where it can provide long-term shade. Avoid planting too close to buildings, drains, or paving, since its vigorous roots and broad canopy need space. In a 6" grow bag it starts compact, giving you time to plan the right permanent position.
