Total:

Gazania (Gazania rigens), the treasure flower, is a low, mat-forming annual or tender perennial grown for its large, brilliantly striped daisy flowers in orange, yellow, red, pink and cream that open wide in sunshine. Exceptionally heat- and drought-tolerant, it thrives in hot, dry, sunny spots and sandy or coastal soils where it forms dense, colourful ground cover. The silvery-backed foliage and bold blooms make it ideal for edging, rockeries, pots and embankments. Flowers close in dull weather and at night, opening again to the sun. Tough, undemanding and long-flowering, gazania is perfect for low-water Indian gardens and balconies.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water gazania?
Water sparingly, only when the soil is quite dry. Gazania is very drought-tolerant and rots easily if kept too wet.
How much sun does gazania need?
It needs full, bright sun; the flowers physically close in shade or dull weather, so the sunnier the spot the better.
Is gazania safe for pets?
Yes, gazania is non-toxic to cats, dogs and humans and is safe to grow around pets and children.
Does gazania need repotting?
Often grown as an annual, it rarely needs repotting. As a tender perennial it can be refreshed or divided every year or two.
How do I propagate gazania?
Grow from seed in warm soil, or divide established clumps. Cuttings of side shoots also root in gritty, well-drained mix.
Why won't my gazania flowers open?
Gazania blooms only open in bright sun; in shade, cloudy weather or at night they stay closed. Give it the sunniest position.
How do I get more blooms?
Deadhead faded flowers regularly and keep it in full sun with lean, dry soil to maximise flowering.
Can I grow gazania indoors?
It needs intense direct sun to open its blooms, so it is unsuitable indoors. Grow it outdoors in full sun.
Is gazania toxic if eaten?
No, gazania is non-toxic, although it is an ornamental and not grown for eating.
What fertilizer should I use?
Feed lightly once a month at most; it thrives in poor soil and over-feeding reduces flowering.
