Growing tips

Plant at the start of the monsoon (June-July) or in early spring when the soil is warm; this gives the clump a full growing season to establish.

Position in the sunniest spot you have and crush a leaf occasionally to release the scent near sitting areas. Water generously through summer, reduce in winter, and protect from frost in north India. Divide the clump every couple of years to keep it vigorous and prevent the centre from going woody.

Citronella Plant Care

Citronella is an easy-going aromatic plant that thrives in bright light, so give it 4-6 hours of direct sun each day on a balcony, terrace or sunny windowsill. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry and make sure the pot drains freely, as the roots dislike sitting in water. Feed lightly through the growing season and pinch back stems now and then to keep the foliage bushy and full of its lemony scent.

Citronella Benefits & Uses

The Citronella Odomos plant is best known for its citrus-scented leaves, which release a fresh lemony fragrance when brushed or crushed. Many gardeners grow it near seating areas, doorways and windows for its pleasant aroma and lush green foliage. It doubles as an attractive ornamental grass-like plant that fits neatly into container gardens, balconies and small outdoor spaces.

Where to place your Citronella

Position Citronella where it gets plenty of sunlight and where you will regularly walk past it, such as near patios, balcony railings, entrance steps or outdoor dining spots, so you enjoy its scent. It suits pots and grow bags equally well, making it ideal for renters and compact urban gardens. Keep it in a spot with good air circulation and shelter it from harsh afternoon sun in the hottest months.
